Session Cookies

Temporary cookies that are automatically deleted when the user closes their web browser.

Session cookies are temporary cookies that exist only for the duration of a user’s browsing session. They are stored in the browser’s memory rather than written to disk, and they are automatically deleted when the browser is closed. Common uses include maintaining login state as you navigate between pages, storing temporary shopping cart contents, and managing CSRF protection tokens.

From a privacy perspective, session cookies are generally considered less intrusive than persistent cookies because they do not track users across visits. Many necessary session cookies, such as those maintaining an authenticated state or enabling core site functionality, may be exempt from consent requirements under the ePrivacy Directive. However, session cookies used for analytics, tracking, or advertising still require consent regardless of their temporary nature. The key factor is purpose, not duration.
