First-Party Cookies

Cookies set directly by the website domain that the user is currently visiting.

First-party cookies are set by the website’s own domain and are generally used to improve user experience. Common uses include remembering login sessions, storing language preferences, keeping items in a shopping cart, and maintaining other site-specific settings. Because they are set by the site the user intentionally visits, they are considered less invasive than third-party cookies.

Despite being less controversial, first-party cookies are not exempt from privacy regulations. Under the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive, only strictly necessary first-party cookies (those essential for basic website functionality like session management or security) can be set without consent. Analytics cookies, personalization cookies, and any first-party cookies used for tracking or profiling still require user consent. Website operators must audit their first-party cookies to properly categorize and disclose them.
